Mary Hardy Appears in Dorchester

To celebrate the premiere of the Netflix film, Enola Holmes, 5 statues of accomplished sisters of some of England's most widely recognised male cultural icons have been erected in London's Baker Street, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Bath and right here in Dorchester.

For a limited time Thomas Hardy will be joined by his sister Mary Hardy (1841 - 1915). Mary was highly intellectual and, unusually for the time period, Mary went into higher education and worked for several years as a teacher before being appointed to Headmistress of Piddlehinton Village School. This was a significant achievement for any woman of this time and earned her much respect from the local community and beyond.

Many accounts agree that Thomas Hardy was very close to his sister and, according to commentator Professor Bailey, she was 'his intellectual and artistic comrade in youth'. And she in turn, adored her brother, so it is lovely to see them reunited, if only for a short time, in Dorchester.
