The Cerne Abbas Giant
To take your mind off the unprecedented situation we all find ourselves in, here’s a bit of Dorset history for you.
There are many chalk drawings on hillsides in and around the county of Dorset but none quite so famous as The Cerne Abbas Giant. Standing on a hillside on the outskirts of Cerne Abbas, it measures a colossal 55metres (180ft) high and is a nationally important archaeological site. As such it is listed as a scheduled monument of England.
It is unclear how old the Cerne Abbas Giant is but regardless of its age it has become an important part of local culture and folklore, often associated with fertility, and is one of England’s best known hill figures.
