10 cosy Dorset pubs to enjoy this Winter
We hope you’ve all enjoyed the first few weeks of January and perhaps enjoyed a few strolls through Dorset’s beautiful countryside. We are certainly feeling a nip in the air now and there’s nothing like a cosy pub with a roaring fireplace to thaw out in at the end of a frosty walk.
Here’s a few of our recommendations:
Cove House Inn - Portland
Situated right on the magnificent Chesil Beach, part of the famous Jurassic Coast, take a bracing stroll along this long stretch of coastline before curling up with a fine wine or real ale in front of the pub’s open fire whilst watching the waves lash the shoreline.
The Smugglers Inn - Osmington Mills
Also overlooking the Jurassic Coast, you can take in breath-taking views of the coastline whilst tucking into some hearty pub grub. With plenty of walks around the village and by the sea, this idyllic pub is the perfect finish line to rest weary feet.
Why the name? It was once home to the leader of the most notorious gang of smugglers!
The Kings Arms – Portesham
After taking a scenic hike up to Hardy’s Monument, reward yourself with a roast with all the trimmings and cosy up to the three traditional open log fires. This pretty pub prides itself on using local produce in their delicious meals.
Drusilla’s Inn – Wimborne
Once a row of 17th century farm cottages, this traditional thatched pub boosts uninterrupted views of the historic Horton Folly Tower. With its exposed beams, horse brasses and gorgeous inglenook fireplaces, Drusilla’s oozes olde-worlde charm. There’s a range of menus on offer, featuring home-made, locally produced, free range food and an international wine list. Enjoy a hike or cycle in idyllic Thomas Hardy country before popping in to re-coup.
The Thimble Inn – Dorchester
Surrounded by the rolling hills of the beautiful Piddle Valley in Piddlehinton, there’s no shortage of walks to enjoy before you warm up by the roaring log fire in this traditional chocolate box pub. Admire it’s pretty sandstone floors, antique furniture and indoor well whilst sampling some top quality nosh.
The Greyhound - Sydling St Nicholas
With its traditional flagstone floors and glowing log burner, The Greyhound is a centuries old coaching inn steeped in history. The restaurant features a sunken well from where coachmen used to pull up buckets for the horses during stagecoach stops. Treat yourself to hearty food that changes daily, washed down with real ale or lager. There are plenty of picturesque walks in the area and the famous Cerne Abbas Giant is close by.
The Bankes Arms – Studland
Just a 7-minute walk from the stunning Studland Bay, this 16th century old smugglers haunt is well worth a visit. Once you’ve explored the beaches or taken a hike along the South West Coast Path, make a stop at this award-winning pub with its cosy log fires and candles. They offer the full range of Purbeck Ales and a great range of food with a family-friendly children’s menu.
The Square and Compass - Worth Matravers
A popular stop for coast path walkers, this quirky pub even has a museum built on the side! With live music and a large open fire, The Square and Compass has an intimate homely atmosphere. We love that furry friends are also welcome to relax post-walk.
The Castle Inn – Lulworth
After a bracing walk along Lulworth beach, taking in the renowned Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, head to The Castle to enjoy a warming Sunday lunch. The pudding here comes highly recommended!
The Royal Oak - Cerne Abbas
With beamed ceilings, exposed brick walls and blazing fireplaces, The Royal Oak has charm by the barrels. After a chilly hike around the village and up to see the Giant, tuck into some seasonal produce and a local brew.
All the above can be enjoyed as part of a quintessential Dorset day out- happy pubbing!
