Gardens and National Trust Sites
Spring is the best time to visit some of Dorset’s picturesque gardens. Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens near Weymouth is one of the most popular. This award-winning attraction features exotic plants from around the world and in springtime, you can see a variety of magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons in full bloom.
To see an array of daffodils, bluebells, tulips and primroses spring into life, head to Forde Abbey and Minterne Gardens, both of which have extensive collections of spring bulbs and flowers.
Situated in Wimborne, Kingston Lacy House and Gardens is a National Trust site with over 8,500 acres of parkland, gardens and woodland to explore. Admire a beautiful collection of spring flowers, including daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. The estate also features a Japanese Garden and a stunning avenue of cherry trees that burst into blossom in the spring.
If you’re a National Trust member or enjoy visiting NT sites, another must-visit destination is Corfe Castle, the ruins of an impressive 11th-century castle with a rich history. Surrounded by Dorset’s rolling hills and panoramic views of the Isle of Purbeck, visiting when the sun sets through the ruins is an experience not to be missed.
Spring Events
Dorset has a fantastic variety of events that take place in spring. The county is home to many theatres and music venues that offer performances throughout the season, including the Lighthouse theatre in Poole and the Electric Palace in Bridport.
Sherborne Abbey Festival will take place in the beautiful abbey from the end of April, featuring classical and choral music performances. If you’re a fan of music festivals, Teddy Rocks in Blandford is a great one for the whole family. Held from 28th – 30th April, visitors can camp for the weekend.
If you love Oktoberfest, then you’ll love Springtober Fest! Held at Nothe Fort in Weymouth on 11th March, you’ll have the chance to sample Dorset’s best beers and an array of local food.
If you’re a foodie, there are plenty of events to tickle the tastebuds across the county this spring. Abbotsbury Food Fair on 8th April will feature over 30 stalls selling local produce and crafts surrounded by beautiful spring flowers and wildlife. If you’ve never visited Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, entry is included with the ticket.
Other food and drink events include Shaftesbury Food and Drink Festival on 7th May and Christchurch Food Festival from 27th – 29th May. At Shaftesbury Festival, don’t miss the Gold Hill Cheese Race, whereby participants race up the famous steep hill with a huge and very heavy wheel of locally-made cheese!
Picnic Spots, Cafés and Restaurants
If you’re looking for a scenic spot for a picnic, Dorset has plenty of options. One of the most popular picnic spots is Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast in Lulworth. The breath-taking beach and clear water make it a lovely spot to enjoy a picnic and soak up the sun.
For those who prefer a restaurant experience, there’s no shortage of those that offer captivating views and delicious food. One of the most popular restaurants is the Hive Beach Café, located in Bridport. With a variety of seafood dishes, coastal views and a multitude of walking trails nearby, visiting would make a great spring day out.
Another restaurant to check out is The Pig on the Beach in Studland. You can tuck into locally-sourced dishes whilst gazing at incredible views of the sea. Why not start with a stroll to the iconic Old Harry Rocks at the end of the Jurassic Coast?
For a peaceful and pretty spot to have a cuppa and a slice of cake in the spring sunshine, we recommend visiting Upwey Wishing Well, located between Weymouth and Dorchester. The well in the tranquil gardens dates back to the 1800s and is said to have healing powers.
For those who enjoy art and nature, Sculpture by the Lakes is a must-visit destination. Located in rural Pallington just outside Dorchester, you can enjoy a walk around the beautiful lakeside gardens while admiring a collection of sculptures by different artists. Pack a picnic or visit the on-site café.
