Summer may be over but there is still plenty to do across Dorset in September. From family-friendly attractions to a variety of theatre and art festivals, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Family-Friendly Events
Bournemouth Air Festival (31st August – 3rd September) is one of the largest airshows in Europe, drawing in crowds of visitors every year. The event features displays of military aircraft, fighter jets, helicopters and aerobatic teams, including the famous Red Arrows. Along the beach, there’ll be a buzzing atmosphere with a range of food and drink stalls, entertainment and fairground rides.
The annual Dorset County Show in Dorchester (2nd – 3rd September) is a testament to the region's rich agricultural heritage and community spirit, bringing farmers, craftspeople, locals and visitors together to celebrate the best of Dorset’s rural traditions. From impressive livestock displays and equestrian competitions to artisanal crafts and local produce, the show offers a glimpse into the world of farming and country living.
Situated on Weymouth Peninsula, Dorset Seafood Festival has been rebranded to Seafeast (9th – 10th September). With 100 stalls to visit, you can try fresh catches from local waters prepared by top chefs, some of whom will be showcasing their skills via interactive demonstrations. There’ll also be drinks stalls and family entertainment.
Shaftesbury Carnival will bring a kaleidoscope of colour to the high street on Saturday 30th September, with a week of events to celebrate. Can you believe the carnival has been taking place for over 140 years?
Heritage Open Days
Every September, thousands of volunteers organise events to celebrate England’s fascinating history and culture. Heritage Open Days takes place from 8th – 17th September this year, with the chance to try new experiences and explore hidden places across the county for free.

Theatre, Art and Music Events
Celebrating art, culture and community, the B-Side Festival (7th – 10th September) showcases the talents of local and international artists alike. This summer, the festival is returning to Portland with a variety of art installations under the theme ‘Common Lands’, which invites visitors to explore their relationship with the stunning landscape.
Film & Comic Con Bournemouth (9th – 10th September) brings movie buffs, comic enthusiasts and gaming aficionados together for an immersive pop culture and fantasy experience. Cosplayers will roam the halls of the Bournemouth International Centre, bringing beloved characters to life, while panels and workshops delve into the latest trends in entertainment. Meet your favourite TV and film stars, comic writers and artists or browse merchandise and rare collectibles.
Inside Out Dorset is an international arts festival known for its unique blend of outdoor performances, installations and interactive experiences across theatre, dance, music and visual arts. Running over two weekends from 15th – 24th September, this year’s festival will take place at Moors Valley Country Park & Forest, Poole, Wimborne, Bere Regis and Weymouth. Set against the stunning natural landscapes of Dorset, Inside Out Dorset offers attendees the opportunity to engage with art in unexpected and immersive ways, often incorporating the environment as an integral part of the artistic narrative.
From 29th September – 1st October, Bournemouth’s streets, parks and venues will come alive with a diverse array of artistic performances, from street theatre and dance to intriguing installations and participatory experiences. The vibrant Arts by the Sea festival is a celebration of art, culture, people and place – an explosion of artistic expression in all its forms.
